Why seal pavers in South Florida

Unsealed pavers soak up stains, lose their color in the sun and lose joint sand every time it rains hard. Once the sand washes out, weeds and ants move in and pavers start to shift.

Sealing locks the joint sand in place, protects against stains and brings back the color. A 'wet look' finish is available if you want the pavers darker and glossier.

How we do it

We clean the surface and the joints, remove weeds and debris, and let everything dry. Then we sweep in polymeric (stabilizing) sand and apply the sealer.

Pavers must be dry before sealing, so we sometimes clean one day and seal the next. If rain is forecast, we reschedule rather than risk spotting.

After sealing

No foot traffic for 24 hours and no cars for 48 hours. Sealers slow staining and fading, but they don't last forever. In Florida sun, plan on resealing every few years.

Questions people ask

How long does paver sealer last in Florida?

It depends on sun, shade, irrigation and traffic. Most sealed pavers here need a reseal every 2 to 4 years.

What is polymeric sand?

It's joint sand with a binder that hardens after it's wet. It holds pavers in place and keeps weeds and ants from coming back up through the joints.

Will sealer make my pavers slippery?

Sealed pavers can be a bit smoother. For pool decks we recommend a finish suited to wet areas, and we talk through the options before we start.

What's the white haze on my pavers?

That's efflorescence, a natural salt that comes out of concrete pavers. It may need a separate treatment before sealing.
